March 2012: Adapting to the weather conditions and available moisture

TruGreen is the market leader when it comes to adapting our treatment programmes to meet the ever changing weather climate of the UK.

There's been a lot of talk lately about the lack of rainfall across the UK this past winter. What has not been made clear is that while we may not have had enough rainfall to fill reservoirs, there has been more than ample in allowing enough moisture for the grass plant. A big relief for TruGreen customers! We're big believers when it comes to providing a tailored and customised solution for our customers' lawns and we're making a number of recommendations given the current weather advise.

By making sure that the thatch layer is maintained to a minimum through spring scarification and by incorporating aeration into the early part of the year, we can encourage the grass roots to be healthy and be better able to take on the nutrients applied through fertiliser. A strong root will also search for moisture keeping the grass greener and for longer. When mowing, we advise our customers to keep the grass leaf longer. We recommend between 30-35mm, as this allows for greater moisture retention in the leaf, facilitating greater chlorophyll production and increasing photosynthesis. Longer grass will also make better use of any early morning dew that may have been produced overnight. There are other strategies which include the use of organic fertilisers, which can be greatly beneficial and the use of growth regulators and soil corrective wetting agents. These offer other ways of reducing energy loss, allowing the plant to use the supply of moisture more efficiently.
