Weed & Moss Control

A weed is any plant that grows where it is not wanted ! All lawns are susceptible to weed seeds from the wind, birds, pets and the soles of shoes.

Does your lawn have a selection of weeds that does your lawn no justice ?

TruGreen van and machinery We can control most weeds at certain times of the year as long as they are in growth. We will recommend the most appropriate application along with suitable fertilisation to ensure that grass grows and weeds are forced out.

Moss can be a perennial problem in many lawns and changing turf conditions can improve some areas. However, treatment and removal by Scarification is required in most instances. Continued Aeration will improve drainage and is also recommended.

If you're fed up with unsightly moss year after year, ask your TruGreen owner for the best recommended program for your lawn !

Scarification

Scarification Equipment Scarification is the mechanical process used to "scrape up" dead moss that has previously been treated. It is also used to "comb out" heavy thatch from a lawn.

Too much thatch will prevent moisture and nutrients from penetrating the soil and reaching the root system.

We take care to remove as few healthy plants as is possible during the process; however the process may result in a need for over seeding in some areas. Scarification is an intense treatment which requires specialist equipment but in many instances the process is essential to changing the consistency of the turf.

Your TruGreen owner will be pleased to advise the best time for the scarification of your lawn if necessary.

Pest Control
Pest Control Application

The most common pests that affect British lawns are:

  • Chafer grubs
  • Leatherjackets (Crane Fly, or Daddy Long Legs)
  • Worm Casts
  • Ants
  • Moles

Control Products for these pests are not generally available in DIY form to homeowners. Our TruGreen owner will recommend an appropriate course of action once we have identified the pest involved. Professional assistance is strongly advised to ensure the best possible solution and it may be necessary to refer the problem to an environmental specialist.

Fungus & Disease Control

Control through your maintenance program is the first step in keeping fungus and disease at bay. See Watering & Mowing Quicktips

TruGreen Equipment

Diseases will manifest in many forms, the most commonly recognised are:

  • Moulds
  • Brown & Yellow Patches
  • Toadstools & Fairy Rings
  • Lichen
  • Algae

Many of these will attack a lawn between spring and autumn and are often apparent during moist weather.

It is important to recognise that some patches are not caused by disease. Spilled mower fuel, dog urine, compaction and matted thatch will cause similar visual effects.

Your TruGreen owner will be happy to recommend the best course of action.

Fertilisation

The experts at TruGreen know that the grass plant benefits most if it is fertilised in useable amounts, several times a year.

In the same way that you would not feed a pet huge amounts of food once a month, it is not in the best interests of the grass plant to provide an excessive amount of fertiliser once or twice a year.

Fertlisation After decades of serving customers and analysing results, TruGreen has developed a program based on up to 6 treatments throughout the year when the plant is growing.

Lawn Application
Lawn treatment programs may vary depending on your lawns needs. This is a summary of the normal applications that could be applied to your lawn.

Early Spring
The lawn is now beginning a growth cycle following the winter dormancy. Most broadleaf weeds are not yet growing and insects are inactive. This application of fertiliser is designed to help the grass begin the growing cycle and strengthen the grass plant for the coming warmer months.

Moss control can also begin at this time, See Weed & Moss Control (above) for more information.

Late Spring
This application provides the proper mix of nutrients in order to promote strong leaf growth and overall plant health. Broadleaf weed control can also begin at this time. See Weed & Moss Control (above) for more information.

This is an excellent time to aerate the lawn. See Aeration (above) for more information.

Early Summer
This treatment provides the correct balance of nutrients as the plant enjoys strong leaf growth.

Broadleaf weed control will continue. Maintenance guidelines need to be continued. See Watering & Mowing Quicktips for more information.

If turf insects and pests are present, your TruGreen owner can advise you on any appropriate treatments.

Late Summer
Grass plants are now reproducing and strengthening. There may be an increase in turf density and the grass will grow more vigorously. This application provides a nutrient balance to ensure growth momentum is maintained.

Early Autumn
As the amount of daylight decreases in the autumn, temperatures begin to cool and leaf growth slows. This treatment will apply a balanced mix to ensure that the grass receives suitable nourishment in line with these changes in temperature.

Weed Control may continue and it may be appropriate to Scarify and remove any Moss. See Scarification (above) for more information.

Late Autumn
At this time the grass plant stops putting food into leaf growth and the food generated now goes into root development and growth. This application ensures that the plant receives the correct nutrition to ensure that root growth continues and provides for strong healthy plants in the spring.

Aeration can also take place at this time.

Aeration

Aeration Aeration is a very effective mechanical action that will benefit all lawns.

Does your lawn suffer from any of the following ?

  • Compaction
  • Excessive thatch
  • Poor drainage
  • Moss

Aeration will almost certainly help alleviate these problems and will also allow for nutrients, water and oxygen to penetrate into the root zone. This process then allows for deeper root growth into the soil ensuring strong healthy plants at all times !
