Lawn Fertilisation
Why does my lawn need it?
Is your lawn looking unhealthy in colour and texture? It could possibly be due to the lack of fertlisation to feed it and help it grow healthily.
What is Lawn Fertilisation?
Lawn Fertlisation provides or supplements the natural nutrients the grass plant needs to grow healthily as these nutrients are not always available within the soil for the grass to feed off naturally. Through fertilsation we add these nutrients to your lawn for a healthy, happy, green lawn!
We can tell you exactly what treatments are suited for your lawn through our FREE, without obligation 14 Point Lawn Care Analyis.
Weed Control
Why does my lawn need it?
Weeds come in many colours, shapes and sizes, but all do ruin the appearance of your lawn! You may have weeds growing through your lawn, perhaps you have more weeds than lawn or just a few that seem to spoil the overall appearance of your lawn?
What is Weed Control?
Weed Control is an ongoing process to help eradicate weeds. It can often take more than one treatment to keep certain weeds at bay, to give your lawn the chance to grow back healthily.
The treatments that we offer do not affect grass plants. However, weed control products should not be applied to newly seeded grass for approximately 6 months.
Let TruGreen Bromley take care of your weeds!
Lawn Scarification
Why does my lawn need it?
Every lawn needs to be scarified to help prevent the build up of thatch and other debris that will slow the growth of a healthy lawn.
What is Lawn Scarification?
Scarification is a mechanical operation which will remove all unwanted organic matter from around the base of the grass plant (thatch) and neaten up any loose growth from your lawn. The process will also remove moss that will otherwise choke out the grass plant and restrict the growth of your lawn.
We carry out lawn scarification in bromley at the beginning of the growing season (Spring or early Autumn) to allow the grass to recover from this process as fast as possible. Because of the stress that scarification places on the healthy grass plants it is not done routinely, but only when it is apparent that it will specifically resolve some difficulty or problem.
Lawn Aeration
Why does my lawn need it?
If you lawn doesn’t look healthy as it should it is probably because it’s not getting the correct nutrients it needs at the root and struggles with drainage problems, that’s where aeration can help!
What is Lawn Aeration?
There are two types of aeration that we can carry out: Solid tine aeration which aids the development of the grass plant, and hollow core aeration which can be used in allowing for the incorporation of a top dressing and improved drainage for your lawn. Both are used for different reasons, which we will establish at your FREE, 14 point lawn analysis.
Aeration can be carried out at any time of the year, it is ideal to aerate during the late spring which helps to increase the grass health and nutrient uptake leading up to the main growing season as well as in Autumn to help aid in drainage during the wetter season.
Moss Control
With the excessive amount of rainfall, it has produced a large amount of damp which has allowed for moss to invade many lawns across the UK.
When is comes to your lawn moss is something that every lawn has or will have to deal with at one time or another. It will manifest itself on healthy grasses and choke the plant, as well as starving the grass plant of the all-important nutrients applied through fertiliser. There are a few reasons for the build-up of moss in a lawn, but extremely damp and shady areas are at most risk and combined with shorter hours of daylight in the winter months, the ideal conditions are produced for moss to develop.
Moss loves to grow in poor conditions and will thrive where other plants struggle, taking over their space. It is most common on compacted soil, where you can experience poor drainage, is suited to low fertility, common in the early spring, and where grass has been mown too closely the previous year. Once it’s established it will quickly spread, appearing as an unwanted and unsightly addition to a lawn.
The application of a quality commercial product, based on sulphate of iron, followed by a programme of scarification will keep the moss at bay and allow for the grasses to grow and thicken. Scarification will also reduce the thatch layer which if left to build-up will become an ideal growing medium for the further development of mosses. Aeration will further improve the ground conditions, removing unnecessary moisture and minimising the chances of moss returning.
By visiting your lawn regularly your TruGreen Bromley lawn care expert will identify problems whilst they are still small and treat them before they cause serious damage. Our extensive experience has shown that a lawn thrives after regular moss treatment and scarification and because we operate a bespoke system, we can customise the treatments to the specific needs of your lawn.
So do not wait for a moss disaster to happen, spring into action and call your local TruGreen Bromley lawn expert today.
Pest Control
Last summer provided a mixture of long hot days and heavy downpours, providing the ideal environmental conditions for chafer grubs and leatherjackets to survive and prosper.
There have recently been a number of cases of lawn pests in the Bromley area due to the wet summer that we experienced last year.
The most common lawn pests are Chafer grubs and leatherjackets, which feed on the roots of turf grasses. Not only will this cause the plant have a straw-coloured appearance and can eventually kill it.
It’s important that any infestations are treated straight away, preferably at the larvae stage to achieve the most efficient control. Later treatments, when the development is more advanced, may be less effective or require more than one treatment, resulting in major damage to the lawn.
Crane flies have already been seen flying around, and as the adults start to lay eggs in the next couple of months, the resulting damage can be highly destructive.
If you are concerned about the colour of your lawn or if you have started to spot pests on your lawn, contact your us on 0203 770 9525.
Lawn Disease Treatment
Why does my lawn need it?
It is vital that all lawn related diseases are treated as soon as possible! The development of most diseases is usually dependent upon weather conditions, so recent weather conditions are considered during any diagnosis. Most diseases will have certain characteristics such as discolouration of the grasses, brown dry patches or signs of fungi (mushroom type growth).
Common Lawn Diseases include:
- Red Thread – Red patches of dying grass
- Rust – Rust coloured patches of grass
- Fusarium, Microdochium Patch, Pink Snow Mould – Small circular patches of discolouration
- Leaf Spot – Dark patches on the leaves of the grass plant
- Dollar Spot – Middle of grass leaf damage
- Fairy Rings – Circles of damage to the lawn
What is Lawn Disease Treatment?
We can apply pesticides throughout the year, the more regular the treatments, the better the control over the lawn diseases in question. We also recommend regular scarification to minimise any thatch layer, and aeration to allow for a good air flow to be maintained to the root of the plant.

Benefits of grass on the environment
Environmental facts of the grass plant.
Grass Is Good For the Environment
Although it would seem unnecessary to state the obvious, grass is good, as it supports and enhances the environment.
Grass Reduces Greenhouse Gas
Grass absorbs greenhouse gases and converts it into life-giving oxygen. Grass does this at a much higher rate than many other plants because grass has higher leaf density and a faster growth rate.
Grass is Nature’s own Air Conditioner
Grass lowers surface temperatures through “evapotranspiration” which is a process similar to that used by old-fashioned air conditioning units. On a hot summer day, lawns will be significantly cooler than tarmac, bare soil and any form of artificial turf!
Grass Purifies Water
Grass roots act as a natural environmental filter, and in combination with soil profile and the bacteria present makes a lawn root zone the ideal medium for any contaminants that are carried in water to be removed.
Grass Purifies the Air
Grass absorbs some of the worst atmospheric pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, maintaining air quality.
Lawn Care Frequently Asked Questions
We have compiled a list of the most common asked lawn care questions from over the last 13 years in the lawn care industry. However, if you have a question of your own that is not on the list, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 0203 770 9525
Q. Are any of our products that we use harmful to pets?
A. No. As we only E.U approved apply products and also we use them with care at the correct application rate there is no risk to pets. However are precaution we do suggest that they are kept off the lawn while the treatments are being applied and for at least an hour afterwards if possible.
Q. When can I cut my lawn after a treatment has been applied?
A. Each treatment is bespoke so we suggest best to ask the operator, as a general rule we suggest that lawns are not mowed for 2 days before and then 3 days after a treatment visit.
Q. Do you we use organic products?
A. We carry a full range of organic fertilisers which some customers prefer. There are currently no organic products for treating weeds so chemical products are our only option. These are highly-regulated and completely safe to use on your property.
Q. How quickly can children play on the lawn after a visit from TruGreen?
A. Each treatment will require different times but we ask that children, especially young ones, be kept away from the lawn during treatment and for at least an hour afterwards.
Q. What height do you recommend for mowing the lawn?
A. The common British lawns comprises of a mixture of various grasses and include a large amount of dwarf ryegrass and we would inform you of your lawn type when we meet you. We recommend that these lawns are mowed at between 26mm and 31mm (an inch to an inch and a quarter) in order to encourage and benefit from a healthy lawn. A fine grass lawn (which could be compared perhaps with a bowling green or putting green) can sustain being mowed shorter.
Q. When Do I need to water my lawn?
A. Grass plants require water as do all plants. In periods of prolonged dry weather the lawn will require watering in order to stay healthy. We suggest watering after dark when evaporation is much less.
Q. Does the type of soil that we have in Bromley and the South Of England have a bearing on how lawns are treated?
A. Most of the soil conditions in our area are clay and frequently heavy clay, these soils require annual aeration. Such soils retain moisture which have positive and negative effects. In dry periods the soil will retain moisture allowing the grass to stay green for longer than a free-draining soil but in wet periods it may become waterlogged. Aerating the lawn is important partly to help move water away from the surface, as well as allowing air, water and nutrients from fertilisers to penetrate the grass rootzone.
Q. Is there anything additional that can be done to greater enhance the lawn ahead of a garden party or special occasion where the lawn is on show?
A. If you have a regular lawn treatment programme and mow the lawn frequently (once a week) the lawn should be in good condition all of the time all year round. However for a special occasion there is an additional treatment that can be applied a few days before or so before the event to enhance the colour to create that exceptional effect and last around 2-4 weeks.
Q. Can I buy the products off the shelf that you use on my lawn?
A. No, the products that we use are for professional use only, All our staff are fully trained and accredited by City And Guilds. We are fully trained and insured to use these types of specialist lawn care products.

The nice things people say…
Thank you Mark for turning my lawn from a patchy, mossy, weedy, family lawn into a beautiful green carpet in 8 weeks. Our lawn was a disaster, what with children, pets and paddling pools in the summer. I had given up hope, Mark from TruGreen transformed our lawn within 8 weeks it looked a fabulous, at last we had a lawn to be proud off. TruGreens seeding and scarifying saved me a fortune on having to re turf the lawn.
Unlike other lawn care companies where you get a different person every visit, with TruGreen I get a personal service.
Mark and his team re-turfed my lawn on a day of my choice using a top-quality shade-tolerant turf that had been ‘harvested’ the previous day so it was as fresh as it could be. I was so impressed with the care they took in preparing the ground and laying the turf. I expected to have to trim the edges to shape myself but my new lawn precisely matched the size and shape of the old one – which is just what I wanted. It looked amazing from the outset – worth every penny. Our whole garden looked so much better! Mark took great pains to impress on us the importance of watering it twice daily and not walking on it until it was established. He came to check all was well a month later without charge – I think Mark takes such pride in his work, we could’ve charged him to let him see how well ‘his’ lawn was doing!
I’d recommend Mark to anyone wanting a new lawn or a bit of TLC on an established one.
My wife and I returned to our own home last year after an absence of nearly eight years. The relatives we had entrusted our home to had seriously neglected the garden, which had become not just a gardener’s nightmare, but anyone’s nightmare! In brief, it had become a cross between a desert and a jungle, which took us a lot of time and effort even to clear. I was left with ground that looked like a bed of nails, with well-established brambles and unwanted shoots sticking up all over the place through what had once been our lawn. I was about to hire a rotavator to continue the clearance when someone at Church recommended Mark Ellis of TruGreen Bromley. I called Mark and am pleased I did.
I’ve never met anyone so enthused by grass! Mark’s knowledge of his subject is extensive and well-applied. He admitted that TruGreen was not the cheapest lawn specialist, but assured me of the highest quality product and highest standards of service. When I learned that the parent company was ServiceMaster, that clinched the deal, as I knew of their good reputation from the past. Mark arranged for Stump Busters to remove all the unwanted trees and stumps from the garden in readiness for our new lawn. Mark and his team then did all the necessary preparation work before laying our new lawn. I now have a lawn than I ever thought possible and am totally satisfied with the product, service and after-care I’ve received. Mark even insisted on giving the lawn it’s first cut! I have no hesitation in recommending Mark Ellis and TruGreen as true lawn professionals. Happy New Year! Happy New Lawn!
The main features of my gardens, front and back, are the lawns and I have tended them without professional help for more than forty years. But I finally concluded last autumn that I could no longer win the battle against moss, thatch, weeds and ant infestation. Fortunately Mark Ellis of TruGreen Bromley came to my rescue. He prepared a plan specifically designed to address my problems, which he carried out systematically over several months, with visits timed both to maximise the effectiveness of the treatments, and to suit my convenience. Thanks to Mark’s professional skill and personal commitment to achieving excellent results, I now again have lawns to be proud of.
Many thanks, I must say the lawn is now looking very good indeed, having just got back from Turkey and played on the most fantastic courses that I have ever seen, I am chuffed with my little garden.
I just wanted to thank you for rescuing my lawn. I wash hanging washing out yesterday & I thought it looked like velvet. To think I nearly resorted to faux grass!
They are very good at keeping in touch. My grass looks a lot better and they give good advice.
They are so reliable, always contact us before they come. Excellent service.
They polite and helpful
Would recommend his work
Working for us for over 10 years now, always courteous, polite and friendly.
As always quick and efficient.
Once again a first class visit. No problems
As usual very efficient and quick service.
This lawn fungus treatment was an extra added to a regular service that I receive from TruGreen. I am delighted with the results of this special treatment, as indeed I have been with the regular lawn treatment service that TruGreen have provided us with over many years.
Our lawn lawnmower mechanic was extremely impressed with our lawn and said it was the best he’d seen in ages. He said it was better than the bowling club’s lawn, whose machinery he services, and he couldn’t get over how clean and weed free it is, and also how thick and dense the grass is. He said it several times – as we walked to the shed to get the mower, and all the way back again as well!
Thank you very much!
p.s Dachshund puppy likes it too – but only as it is so lovely to dig holes in regrettably. We’re working on that……..!
