Spring into 2022 with a lawn care plan from TruGreen

Spring is coming. Here’s how to start preparing your lawn now.

You might not think of January as an ideal time to get your lawn sorted for the spring and summer months. However, it is key to prepare the right treatments now to ensure your lawn looks its best all year round, and there is a lot you can do at this time of the year to prepare your lawn ahead of the warmer months.

The Moss Problem

There can be many reasons for a build-up of moss in a lawn, including but not limited to; excessive moisture, shade, or clay soil. By contacting your local TruGreen business, you will be able to receive a free 14-Point Lawn Analysis that allows our professional lawncare operatives to assess the conditions of your lawn and generate a treatment plan specific to your needs.

Regardless of the cause, however, it is the very damp and shaded areas of your lawn that are at most risk from moss build-up. Combined with the low number of daylight hours during this early part of the year, these have given ideal conditions for moss to develop.

Moss will develop and take over a lawn quickly. Leave it too long and before you know it you will be left with unsightly yellow areas that are void of grass. But don’t panic, there are solutions. The application of a quality commercial product, based on iron sulphate, followed by scarification is the best way of keeping unwanted moss at bay. Planning ahead to carry out this treatment in the spring months is vital to maintaining the health of your lawn, so start thinking about what you need now.

And it’s not just the lawn! Have you noticed moss and algae growing all over your driveway and/or patio? TruGreen’s lawncare operatives are trained to remove any algae and moss from a number of surfaces including patios, decking, driveways and other problem areas.

Aeration Imperatives

The importance of properly aerating your lawn cannot be overstated. Over the winter months, there will have been a natural increase in the amount of moisture retained in the soil, which reduces the amount of air available to the grassroots. As a result, it is vital that this air is reintroduced in the spring if the lawn is to grow healthily throughout the year. This is because it is through the grassroots that nutrients are taken up by the plant. What aeration does is enhance the oxygen levels of the soil, helping to stimulate growth and assisting in the decomposition of any thatch layer – which can be another cause of moss build-up.

The Will to Weed

Though unlikely to have reared their heads in winter months, don’t be fooled into thinking that your lawn is now weed-free. Around this time of the year, your lawn may appear to be absent of any weeds, however, the likelihood is that some will appear later in the spring and early summer. As with most lawn care, the key to controlling weeds is early and regular treatment. Just like moss, weeds will quickly establish a base in your lawn and choke out much of the surrounding grasses.

Furthermore, if your lawn is prone to laying wet or has an excessive thatch layer it will provide the perfect conditions for weeds to flourish later in the year. So whilst it is vitally important that all weeds are regularly treated with a selective weed killer, it is equally important to manage the moisture content and thatch layer in the spring if a weed-free lawn is to be achieved come summer.

Balancing Fertiliser Application

Much like any other living thing, the food intake of the grass plant needs to be carefully moderated. Getting the balance of nutrients wrong will create a marked deterioration in the quality of your lawn. As part of our analysis of your lawn, TruGreen lawncare operatives will tailor each fertiliser application programme to the needs of a specific lawn. Meaning that we will maintain the balance of nutrients that will allow for the grass to remain healthy, disease-free and pleasing to the eye.
