Good soil structure is the foundation of a healthy lawn. Soil can become compacted from lots of use such as mowing, walking and other activities on the lawn. This can develop into a problem for any lawn but especially on heavy loam and clay soils.
If the ground is compacted it is harder for air and water to penetrate, which will result in poor grass growth, and discoloured growth or bare patches. As part of your TruGreen® lawn care programme the process of lawn aeration would be used to loosen the soil allowing nutrients, water and oxygen to penetrate, promoting deeper and stronger root growth.
A good lawn aeration programme not only reduces soil compaction, controls grass thatch, helps control or eliminate moss, but can also thicken turf, reducing weeds and increasing your lawns stress tolerance.
Does your lawn suffer from any of the following?
- Compaction
- Excessive grass thatch
- Poor drainage
- Moss
Lawn aeration is the key to good cultural care and will almost certainly help alleviate these problems, allowing deeper root growth into the soil ensuring strong healthy plants at all times!
At TruGreen we want to make sure you make the right choice and understand the service you are getting. With this in mind TruGreen want to answer your questions so you not only know why you need lawn treatments but also when to have them and how often, please see the links below of the most common questions around Aeration:
What type of Aeration?
There are two main types of aeration that can be considered and are of benefit to the lawn. Solid tine aeration which aids the development of the grass plant, and hollow core aeration which can be used in allowing for the incorporation of a top dressing and improved drainage.
Types of Aeration
- Solid tine aeration
- Hollow tine aeration
- Slit tine aeration
Why have Aeration Treatments?
Aeration is a major factor in having a good lawn. It is vital that a good supply of air is available to the root structure of the plant as this will allow for an efficient use of the nutrients applied through fertiliser applications. Aeration also allows good levels of soil de compaction and pore space to be achieved, especially important during the period where the plant is actively growing. Also by providing passageways through which water can pass means that aeration will also aids drainage and irrigation.
Aeration is important for the following reasons
- Improved air movement within the soil
- Improved pore space
- Aids drainage and irrigation
- Better distribution of nutrients within the plant
- Healthier grass plant
When Aeration Treatments should happen?
Aeration can be carried out at any time of the year apart from when the soil is waterlogged or frozen. It is always best to aerate a lawn when there is sufficient moisture in the soil profile. Therefore it is ideal to aerate during the late spring which helps to increase the grass health and nutrient uptake leading up to the main growing season. The other time of the year when aeration is recommended is during the autumn, which will assist drainage and general grass condition during the wetter winter months. Both spring and autumn are times of the year when the grass plant needs plenty of oxygen, but you should not limit any aeration programme to only these two periods of the year, as the plant will benefit from all year round aeration.

- Late Spring
- Early Autumn
